2013年12月，大會上演講

1976年出生於美國洛杉磯，1998年肄業於加州大學洛杉磯分校[5][6][7] 2001年成為對等網路檔案分享Red Swoosh聯合創始人，2007年該公司被另一家美國網路Akamai以1900萬美元價格收購。[8][9][10][11]2009年夥同格瑞特·坎普，共同成為交通網絡公司優步的聯合創始人。

2014年他成為當年《福布斯》雜誌400名最富有美國人中名列190位，估值達到63億美元。[12] 路透社報道，他是一個比較不顧及別人感受的老闆。[13]

2017年5月末，卡蘭尼克的父母捲入了一起船隻事故，其父親在此次事故中身受重傷，而其母身亡[14][15]。2017年6月21日，基於眾多投資人的壓力，特拉維斯·卡蘭尼克宣布不再擔任優步首席執行官，但仍保留董事會成員位置。[16]

2018年，卡蘭尼克在Neom的顧問委員會中任職。[17][18]

2019年12月31日起，卡蘭尼克退出Uber的董事會，而此前數周他已拋售了自己持有的價值25億美元Uber股票。[19]

卡蘭尼克的母親邦妮·霍羅威茨·卡蘭尼克（Bonnie Horowitz Kalanick）在《洛杉磯日報（英語：Los Angeles Daily News）》擔任廣告企劃；父親唐納·愛德華·卡蘭尼克（Donald Edward Kalanick）為洛杉磯當地的土木工程師，[20][21]自幼在天主教家庭中長大。祖父母為麥可·安德魯·「麥克」· 卡蘭尼克（Michael Andrew "Mike" Kalanick）及瑪麗·澤洛克（Mary Zeyock）。[22][23][24]卡蘭尼克具有斯洛伐克及奧地利血統，在其曾祖父母那代移民至美國生活。[25]

卡蘭尼克有兩位同父異母的姊姊，其中一位為美國演員愛麗森·阿什莉·阿姆的母親，另外還一名身為消防員的弟弟柯里（Cory）。[21][26]
