納撒尼爾·索斯蓋特·謝勒（英語：Nathaniel Southgate Shaler；1841年2月20日—1906年4月10日[1]），是一位美國古生物學家和地質學家，曾發表過大量有關神學和科學相牽連的進化論論文。
傳記[編輯]
謝勒1841年出生於肯塔基州紐波特，曾在哈佛大學勞倫斯科學學院「路易斯·阿加西」(Louis Agassiz)指導下學習[2]，1862年畢業。1868年成為哈佛大學講師，教授了近20年的古生物學(1869年至1888年)和近2年的地質學(1888年至1906年)[3]。1891年始成為勞倫斯學院院長[1]。1873年被聘為肯塔基州地質調查局(Kentucky Geological Survey)主任，直止1880年，他都一直非常致力於這項工作[4]。1884年，他受聘為負責大西洋區的美國地質調查局地質專家[5]。他也是馬薩諸塞州不同年代的農業專員。1895年，出任美國地質學會主席[1]。在美國南北戰爭期間，他還擔任過兩年聯邦官員[5]。
在早期職業生涯中，謝勒是一位神創論和反達爾文主義者。這主要出於對曾在哈佛幫助過他，卓越而又有些保守的阿加西的尊重。當他在哈佛大學的地位穩固後，謝勒逐漸在原則上接受了達爾文主義，但仍通過「新拉馬克主義」(neo-Lamarckian)的視角來看待它。謝勒誇大了查爾斯·達爾文研究的蚯蚓成土作用[6]對其他動物，如螞蟻[7]的重要性。同當時許多其他進化論者一樣，謝勒將自然選擇基本原則-機遇、偶然性和應變性結合在一起，形成一順序、目的和進程圖，其特點是認為進化是生物個體的努力，通過遺傳而形成的。
謝勒也是一位蓄奴制度的代言者，並奉信盎格魯-撒克遜種族的優越性[8]。在他後來的職業生涯，謝勒繼續支持阿加西的人種多元論，一種經常用來支持種族歧視的人類起源理論。1884年謝勒在《大西洋月刊》發表了「黑人問題」一文，聲稱將黑人從奴役中解放出來是「像把孩子丟進了樹林中，需要強勁之手的舊保護」，因為隨着他們的成長，其「獸性」會變得越來越強。而美國的奴隸制度已是「無限的溫和，是有史以來最體面的奴隸制度。」[9]。
在他後來的職業生涯，曾擔任過哈佛大學科學院院長，被認為是大學最熱門的老師之一[10]。他一生發表過從測繪學到倫理學等各類篇幅長短不一的論文。
