2006年4月4日至6月25日期間，該網站仍然處於測試階段 [4] ，數據庫網站於2006年6月26日正式發佈。[5] 該數據庫的內容由用戶生成。Wowhead後來被Fanbyte收購 [1][6]。
2022年3月初開始，中國、印度尼西亞、菲律賓、泰國、土耳其、塞爾維亞和印度的網民無法訪問Wowhead[7]。
