Afrikaans: 'n Man klim uit sy motor om die naghemel oor die Atacamawoestyn te betrag. Die Melkweggordel styg styl oor die toneel en is ryklik bedeel met sterre, gas- en stofwolke wat naby die gesigseinder by die hart van die sterrestelsel aansluit. Die Groot en Klein Magellaanse Wolke, wat buite die Melkweg lê, is aan die regterkant sigbaar. Die helderste ster regs bo is Canopus in die sterrebeeld Carina. Die toneel skep 'n tasbare gevoel van die kosmiese gewelf wat ons aardse tuiste omgewe.
English: A man steps out of his car to enjoy the view somewhere in the Atacama. The band of the Milky Way extends the height of the sky, which is spectacularly layered with stars and clouds of gas and dust, extending in the general direction of our galaxy's heart. The small and large Magellanic Clouds, which lay outside the Milky Way, can also be seen to the right of the frame. The brightest star visible on the top right part of the image is Canopus, in the constellation of Carina. The scene creates a palpable sense of the cosmic fishbowl we call home. |
