各式紋章顏色的名稱

紋章顏色規則是紋章學中的設計理念，就是「金屬不得置於金屬之上，顏色亦不得置於顏色之上」。不過毛皮圖案色如白鼬毛皮圖案色和松鼠皮圖案色等紋章顏色以及位於盾牌底色上的徽標/圖案一般都不受紋章顏色規則制約。現代有人假設，這種規則其實只是中世紀早期因工匠的工具不夠先進，無法在一個顏色上疊塗另一顏色，也無法在一種金屬中鑲嵌另一種金屬而形成的傳統。該假設指出，由於存在上述客觀條件制約，最簡單的辦法便是在金屬盾牌上塗上單色。這個中世紀早期受客觀條件制約的現象被人誤以為是由人主觀設定的紋章顏色規則。
