English: 80-G-42356: Poon Lim, a 25-year-old Chinese mess steward, shows Rear Admiral Julius Furer how he took the spring out of an electric light and made a fish hook while he was adrift in the South Atlantic for 133 days. When his ship was torpedoed off the coast of West Africa, November 23, 1942, he swam to a life raft and found enough food on it to last him for 55 days. After that, he lived on fish and birds.
