該屬由德國鳥類學家路德維希·賴興巴赫於1853年建立,並指定了大鹱作為本屬模式種[3][1]屬名Ardenna來自於1603年義大利科學家乌利塞·阿尔德罗万迪給予信天翁的名字「Ardenna」或「Artenna」。[4]
