羊属是8种羊的总称，均为反刍动物。一般认为，家羊是中亚、东南亚的野生摩弗伦羊的后代。

羊是牛科动物中比较矮壮的一类。羊的脸部和后脚长有味腺，是很重要的性信号，通过对味腺的察觉，公羊可以闻出繁殖能力强并处于发情期的母羊，并和它进行交配。气味也被用于划分领地。羊的胃有四室，是反刍动物。绵羊的毛、奶和肉一直以来都被人类使用。

世界上数量最多一种羊就是家养的绵羊，最大的种群在中国和澳大利亚。
