長戟大兜蟲又名海克力斯大兜蟲，成蟲體長可達180毫米，是全世界最大的甲蟲。力量極大，可以攜帶自身體重350倍的物體，因此以希臘神話中的大力士海克力斯命名。一般所稱的「獨角仙」即是此種。但其實正式的獨角仙指的應該是叉犀金龜屬、雙叉犀金龜和其的六個亞種。

長戟大兜蟲屬完全變態，幼蟲期約1-1.5年，長度可達180毫米，重量可達150克。幼蟲期之後會化蛹，羽化之後的成蟲以樹汁或腐爛的水果和甲虫啫喱為食。

長戟大兜蟲兩性異型:

雄蟲有犄角，可分為頭角與胸角。雌蟲無犄角。
