惡魔貓
惡魔貓（英語：Demon Cat，簡寫：D.C）[1]是一隻貓的幽靈的名稱，據傳這隻貓出沒於美國華盛頓哥倫比亞特區的政府大樓中。[2]
歷史[編輯]
惡魔貓的歷史可以追溯至數百年前，當時人們將一些貓帶入美國國會大廈地下室以捕殺老鼠，傳說惡魔貓也在其中，即使死後它也從未離開過。[3]它的家被認為是國會大廈的地下室，那裏最初是打算作為喬治·華盛頓總統的葬禮室。[4][5]
根據傳說，惡魔貓會在一些災難發生前出現，它在約翰·甘迺迪、亞伯拉罕·林肯被暗殺前，以及1929年華爾街股災前曾被目擊。[6]惡魔貓傳說的常見版本為：一個警衛在國會大廈巡邏時遇見一隻黑貓，儘管這種情況在當時並不罕見，人們需要貓來控制老鼠的數量，但這隻黑貓卻隨着距離的縮短而越來越大，直至如同老虎般巨大。怪獸般的黑貓撲向對方，驚慌的警衛試圖將其驅離，但惡魔貓卻在彼此接觸前消失。[7]
在19世紀90年代，一些警衛曾試圖向惡魔貓開槍射擊，但據說對方莫名消失，之後一名老年警衛因驚嚇誘發心臟病發作去世。在20世紀40年代後，惡魔貓的目擊報告就此終結。[8]
在國會大廈的混凝土地板上，有着一些模糊的貓爪印，一些人相信這是惡魔貓留下的，但更合理的解釋是：1898年，國會大廈發生瓦斯爆炸事件，一些石塊被替換為混凝土，這些爪印可能是某隻貓咪走過濕混凝土留下的。[9]

美國國會大廈歷史協會首席導遊Steve Livengood認為，早期國會大廈警衛經常飲酒，有時醉酒的警衛將靠近他們的貓誤認為怪物。而且這些警衛向上級報告時並不會（也無法）約束飲酒，僅僅只是允許回家休息，因此其它一些警衛也宣稱受到惡魔貓的攻擊以試圖休假一日，這些警衛敘述的故事最終變為都市傳說而流傳。[10]
流行文化[編輯]
一支專業女子輪滑隊伍DC DemonCats以Demon Cat這個名字作為隊伍名稱。[11]

'The demon cat would usually meet someone alone in a dark corridor. It had large yellow eyes that seemed to hypnotize, and it would snarl. It would seem to grow larger and larger until it would make a final lunge toward its victim and then either explode or disappear over the victim's head,' Thayn said. Historians recorded stories of the Capital Police firing guns toward the hissing cat as it disappeared only to find they were shooting into an empty hallway. 'It was said to appear only on the eve of a national tragedy or the change of administrations.' The cat even has a nickname among Capital workers: 'D.C.'
