小花牡荆，又称为莫拉菲树，生长于印尼、马来西亚与菲律宾一带。“莫拉菲”（molave）一词来自于他加禄语 mulawin 的西班牙语音译。[2]
小花牡荆在菲律宾曾广泛被作为家具、船只、厨具及建材之用，但因为滥伐与栖地流失，现已被菲律宾政府列为当地的濒危物种。[3][4]
