貝特西·羅斯（英語：Betsy Ross；1752年1月1日—1836年1月30日；娘家名：伊麗莎白·格里斯科姆；再婚名：伊麗莎白·阿什本；第三次再婚名伊麗莎白·科萊珀爾^[1]）被美國公眾廣泛認作美國國旗的首位製作者，但缺乏足夠的檔案記載以佐證這一觀點。^[2]她也將旗面的六角星改為更易製成的五角星。^[3]^[4]^[5]

生平[編輯]

貝特西·羅斯在1752年1月1日出生於新澤西省格洛斯特城（英語：Gloucester City, New Jersey），是家中的第八個孩子。^[6]她成年後從事室內裝潢工作，並於1773年21歲時嫁給了約翰·羅斯，這一婚姻使她與家庭決裂，並被貴格會開除。兩人遂加入了費城的基督堂，並結識了喬治·華盛頓一家。^[6]

美國公眾曾認為貝特西·羅斯為喬治·華盛頓縫製了第一面美國國旗，研究指出這一觀點來自於1876年美國獨立一百周年時。^[7]1870年羅斯的孫子威廉·坎比向賓夕法尼亞歷史學會遞交了一份文件，稱他的祖母親手縫製了第一面國旗。^[8]貝特西·羅斯隨後被公眾認作著名的愛國者及美國婦女為國家貢獻的象徵之一。然而羅斯的傳記作家瑪拉·米勒認為，貝特西·羅斯只是費城的幾個旗幟製造商之一，她的貢獻僅是將旗上的六角星改為五角星。^[3]
