尼古拉斯·凱奇（原名尼古拉斯·金·科波拉），生於加州長灘。他從父親那裡繼承了意大利血統，而從母親那裡繼承了英國和德國血統。他的雙親是奧古斯特·弗羅伊德·科波拉，比較文學教授和著名導演弗朗西斯·福特·科波拉的哥哥，和瓊·沃吉爾桑，一個舞蹈家和舞蹈教練。他的哥哥是「萬事通」麥克爾·科波拉，一個紐約電台名人（最近在主持WAXQ 104.3，一個紐約的播放古典音樂的電台；代碼waxq，頻率104.3。）
