刺球果屬是蒺藜目刺球果科下唯一屬，約有18個種[1]，該屬部分物種為半寄生植物。本屬植物中國不產[2]。
刺球果科自2009年發表的APG III分類法起和蒺藜科一併置於蒺藜目之下，雖然兩科缺少形態相似性，但是研究者認為將其保留為孤立的科並無多少意義。[3][4]
