Xmarks建立於2006年，作為Firefox最受歡迎的社會化書籤擴充之一，其前身為由Mitch Kapor於2006年在三藩市創立的Foxmarks，[3][4]當時主要向火狐(Firefox)瀏覽器提供免費書籤外掛程式服務。
2009年3月，Foxmarks更名為Xmarks。截止目前，Xmarks服務已向微軟IE8、谷歌Chrome及蘋果Safari等瀏覽器延伸。此外，Xmarks還在其服務中增加了搜尋功能。
目前Xmarks活躍用戶量為200萬左右，所收錄網址達10億個，但一直沒能找到有效盈利模式。
2010年9月份曾宣佈由於無法找到有效盈利模式，將在90天之內關閉服務。11月初，該網站起死回生，推出了免費+付費模式，並未湊效。隨後該公司CEO James Joaquin也向外界徵求各種拯救方案。
2010年12月Xmarks被LastPass收購。[1]2018年5月1日關閉服務。[5]
印度對Xmarks的域名封鎖[編輯]
2012年5月開始，由於法院的要求，xmarks.com域名被印度的主要ISP封鎖，Xmarks相關的各種網站只顯示一條簡單的訊息：「Access to this site has been blocked as per Court Orders.」[6][7][8][9][10]
私隱[編輯]
Xmarks提供了在瀏覽器擴充和Xmarks伺服器之間加密傳輸的選項。個人用戶的書籤對其他用戶保密。但是，將書籤傳送給第三方顯然存在私隱和信任問題。Xmarks為用戶提供了一個選項來繞過Xmarks伺服器，即使用用戶自己搭建的WebDAV或FTP伺服器來儲存書籤，但這個選項僅適用於 Firefox。[11]
為了提供「建議的標籤」和「更智能的搜尋」（Xmarks提供的對Google搜尋的加強功能）的公共服務，用戶的書籤會被Xmarks分析。私隱政策聲明，此分析結果不需要使用有關個人用戶的任何資訊。[12]
