本鱼体型修长，背部扁平。雄鱼背部为褐绿色，侧腹处变成蓝绿色。鱼体和头部遍布许多红斑点。雌鱼与雄鱼相似，但鳍更短，无彩色斑纹。体长可达6公分。

本鱼栖息在雨林中小溪或沼泽，喜群游，属肉食性，以蠕虫、甲壳动物与昆虫等为食。

为体色鲜艳的观赏鱼，喜欢阴暗、水草茂密的鱼缸。
