The 1989 Embassy World Snooker Championship was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place between 15 April–1 May 1989 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England.
Steve Davis won in the final 18–3 against John Parrott. This was Davis' sixth and last world title.
Tournament summary
[编辑]- Davis won by the biggest margin ever at a World Snooker Championship when he beat John Parrott 18–3 in the final to win his sixth title to equal Ray Reardon's total since the competition was re-launched in 1969.[1] The match ended with a session to spare.[2]
- Eddie Charlton defeated Cliff Thorburn 10–9 in the first round. The match ended at 2.40 a.m, and was the second latest finish at the Crucible.[2] With this Charlton became at the age of 59 years and 169 days the second-oldest player to win a match at the World Championship, after Fred Davis in 1979.[3]
- Alex Higgins failed to qualify for the championship for the first time in his career, after he lost to Darren Morgan 8–10 in the final qualifying round, in which Morgan made his debut.[4][5]

Century breaks
[编辑]There were nineteen century breaks in the 1989 World Snooker Championship. The highest break of the event was 141 made by Stephen Hendry.[12] The highest break of the qualifying stage was 143 made by Darren Morgan.[6][13]
