這首歌的結構為複合AABA型（英語：Thirty-two-bar form）[6]。吉米·佩奇在前奏中彈奏了鬆散的藍調吉他反覆段，使用的是一把1958年的萊斯·保羅標準型吉他[7]。從1:24開始到結尾，歌曲包含了一段特雷門琴獨奏、一段爵士鼓獨奏和勞勃·普蘭特激情的歌聲。在該曲的製作中，佩奇使用了反向回聲（英語：Reverse echo）技術。

貝斯手約翰·保羅·瓊斯聲稱佩奇在歌中著名的吉他反覆段也許是在現場演唱《Dazed and Confused（英語：Dazed and Confused (song)）》時的即興表演中誕生的[8]。然而，佩奇在採訪中卻否認了這一點[9]。

抄襲爭議[編輯]

1962年，馬迪·沃特斯錄製了威利·尼克森（英語：Willie Dixon）為他創作的歌《You Need Love》。1966年，英國樂團小臉樂團錄製了此歌，命名為《You Need Loving》，收錄於他們的處女作專輯（英語：Small Faces (1966 album)）中。迪克森的歌曲是普蘭特的最愛之一，《Whole Lotta Love》的部分歌詞抄自迪克森的歌。普蘭特的咬字還與小臉樂團主唱的處理方式非常相似。1985年，迪克森起訴齊柏林飛船，雙方最終以迪克森為勝利一方達成庭外和解[10]。儘管小臉樂團的《You Need Loving》只署了樂團成員名字，但他們未遭到迪克森起訴。

這首歌被許多音樂人翻唱，包括蒂娜·特納、王子、瑪麗·布萊姬及倫敦交響樂團等。亞當·蘭伯特在2009年的第八季美國偶像上翻唱了該曲。英國常青電視節目《Top of the Pops》把這首歌用作主題音樂，使它在英國非常著名。在70和80年代使用的版本為CCS樂團（英語：Collective Consciousness Society）的翻唱，該版本在1970年達到英國單曲榜第13位。1998年，這首歌重新成為主題音樂，這次用的是原版吉他反覆段的改編版。
