English: Local prisoners completed construction of the Port Lyttelton, timeball station in 1876. The station signaled Greenwich mean time to ships in the harbor.[1] Lyttelton's timeball was one of three in New Zealand. The others included Wellington (1864) and Dunedin (1868). The station discontinued dropping the time signal after December 31, 1934. However, restoration of the property completed in 1978 eventually led to resuming the schedule of dropping the signal at 1p.m. daily.[2]
