小麥哲倫星系(SMC)是一個環繞著銀河系矮星系[5],擁有數億顆的恆星 [5]

推測小麥哲倫星系原本是棒旋星系,因為受到銀河系的擾動才成為不規則星系 [6],但在核心仍殘留著棒狀的結構。

在20萬光年距離上的小麥哲倫星系是最靠近銀河系的鄰居之一,也是裸眼能看見的最遙遠天體之一。

他位於杜鵑座,在夜空中看似模糊的光斑,大小約為3゜,由於平均的赤緯是 -73゜,所以只能在南半球和北半球的低緯度地區看見。他看似銀河系被分割的一個片段,由於表面光度很低,要在黑暗的環境下才能看得清楚。

他與在東方20゜的大麥哲倫星系成為一對,都是本星系群的成員。

迷你麥哲倫雲

早在1986年,天體物理學家D.S.Mathewson、V.L.Ford和N.Visvanathan提出,事實上,小麥哲倫星系可能被一分為二,在它的主要部份後面有一小部分星系(從地球的角度來看),並相距約30,000光年。他們認為,這是由於過去與大麥哲倫星系的互動導致小麥哲倫星系分裂,並且這兩個部分仍在分離。他們將這個較小的遺跡命名為迷你麥哲倫星雲[7][8]

2023年,據報導,小麥哲倫星系實際上是兩個獨立的結構,具有不同的恆星和氣體化學成分,相距約5,000秒差距[9]
