馬文·蓋伊起初是演唱组「月光」（The Moonglows）中的歌手，但在組合於1960年解散以後，與摩城旗下的Tamla公司簽约。
馬文·蓋伊比較有名的單曲有《How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)》、《Ain't That Peculiar》、《I Heard It Through the Grapevine》，還有一些與Mary Wells和Tammi Terrell對唱的單曲。
馬文·蓋伊在1970年代初期所發行的《What's Going On》和《Let's Get It On》兩張專輯，為其顛峰的代表作。1983年，以單曲《Sexual Healing》贏得葛萊美R&B類最佳男演唱人獎。但在隔年（1984年）的4月1日，他45歲生日的前一天，因與其父在自己家中發生爭執而被父親槍殺。
