尼爾·羅伯特·史密斯（英語：Neil Robert Smith，1954年6月18日—2012年9月29日）是一位蘇格蘭地理學家。他曾任紐約市立大學研究生中心人類學和地理學特聘教授，並多次獲獎，包括美國地理學家協會環球圖書獎。[1]

史密斯於1954年出生於蘇格蘭利斯。他是一名教師的四個孩子之一，童年的大部分時間都在愛丁堡東南部的達爾基斯度過。[2]他曾就讀King's Park小學和Dalkeith高中。

史密斯於1977年在聖安德魯斯大學獲得一等學士學位（期間1974-1975年在賓夕法尼亞大學學習一年），並於1982年在約翰斯·霍普金斯大學獲得博士學位，他的導師是著名的馬克思主義地理學家大衛·哈維。他曾在紐約哥倫比亞大學獲終身教職（1982-1986），但哥倫比亞大學關閉了地理系，於是他搬到了新澤西州羅格斯大學（1986-2000）。他在羅格斯大學任地理系主任（1991-94年）和當代文化批判分析中心高級研究員。[3]

史密斯在他的開創性文章《邁向紳士化理論：資本而非人民的回歸城市運動》（Toward a Theory of Gentrification: A Back to the City Movement by Capital, not People, 1979）中提出了內城紳士化理論，認為紳士化是城市土地價格和土地投機推動的經濟過程，而非源於人們在文化上喜歡住在城市。

史密斯於2012年9月29日死於肝腎衰竭。他在去世前幾年被診斷出患有肝病，但2011年再次開始飲酒。[8]他去世時，他的三個兄弟姐妹，他的妻子兼地理學家黛博拉·考恩（Deborah Cowen）、他的前妻兼地理學家辛迪·卡茨（Cindi Katz）[9][7]和他的女兒伊莎貝拉·德里索（Isabella DeRiso）都還在世。

位於愛丁堡的樂隊New Urban Frontier的名字取自史密斯的著作《新城市前沿：士紳化與恢復土地運動者之城》（The New Urban Frontier: Gentrification and the Revanchist City）的書名。其2015年的專輯Game of Capital也是為了紀念史密斯。[10]
