哈兰贝（英语：Harambe，/həˈrɑːmbeɪ/，hə-RAHM-bay）于1999年5月27日出生在德克萨斯州布朗斯维尔葛兰迪波特动物园（英语：Gladys Porter Zoo），他由赢得命名大赛的当地顾问 Dan Van Coppenolle命名[1]，命名由来是利塔·马利（英语：Rita Marley）的歌曲《Harambe (Working Together for Freedom)》（哈兰贝 (为自由而共斗)）[2]，而 Harambee是史瓦希里语里用于描述共同劳动的用语[2]。2014年9月18日，哈兰贝被送往辛辛那堤动物和植物园，以便融入大猩猩的社会群体并学习成年大猩猩的行为。[3][4]

2016年5月28日，一名造访辛辛那提动物园的三岁男童[5]落入了大猩猩的栖息地“大猩猩世界”的水道[6]。据目击者表示，他们听到那名男童说想要进入圈有大猩猩的围栏内[7]，接着、那名男童攀上3英尺（0.91米）的护栏、爬过4英尺（1.2米）的灌木丛，接着往下掉落了15英尺（4.6米），跌入水很浅的水道。园方发现后立刻引导该处的三头大猩猩移动至内部区域，其中两只也确实地返回去，不过哈兰贝并没有这么做，它跳下水道、开始靠近那名落入水中的男童。[6]

美国饶舌歌手扬·萨格和Dumbfoundead（英语：Dumbfoundead）发行了名为《哈兰贝》的歌曲。前者在表示该专辑的曲目都是以他的偶像命名；[45][46]而后者将哈兰贝的命运比喻为帮派暴力和警察滥权的结果[47]。加拿大制片人Excision（英语：Excision (musician)）在他2016年发售的专辑《病毒》（Virus）中有一首名为《哈兰贝》的歌曲。[48]

在都柏林动物园内诞生了一只新生大猩猩并征选命名时，一名少年向园方提议、将该新生大猩猩命名为哈兰贝二世，若是雌性则命名为哈兰贝塔。[49]
