本片探讨了基因改造的主题，以及围绕分娩和堕胎的辩论。导演麦克·莫翰在接受《Fangoria》杂志采访时讲述了一则故事，他的家人在听到反堕胎布道后不再上教堂；但他认为本片无意传达社会讯息。[7]文章写道：
虽然本片归根结底是关于宗教机构强行分娩并索取女人身体的故事，已受到了网络上某些保守派人士的抵制，但莫翰并不在意。“我不认为这是个问题，反而这是一次必要的对话，如果一部电影能够激发这种对话，那么我们的工作就完成了。但我也想明确表示：我希望对话是由观众发起，不想让外界看着我们然后说‘注意那些社会正义战士吧！’”莫翰似乎更愿意让《鬼圣胎》执行恐怖片的另一项重要使命：给人们留下终生的创伤。[7]

《鬼圣胎》的开发早在2014年启动，剧本由安德鲁·洛贝尔（Andrew Lobel）编写，当时席妮·史威尼参与了首次试镜[8]。但该项目并未投入制作，身陷开发地狱[9]。在2019年电视剧《高校十八禁》中取得要角后，史威尼购买了剧本版权，并与曾合作过电视剧《诸事不炫！》（2018年）及电影《偷窥者》（2021年）的莫翰接洽执导[8]。莫翰表示，本片中的许多桥段受到自己天主教成长的启发[10]。
2022年10月，史威尼正式宣告参演，莫翰确定担任导演，史威尼凭借自己的五五十电影（Fifty-Fifty Films）公司而担任监制[11]。据莫翰所述，为更好满足史威尼和观众的期望，剧本最初的演员阵容从高中女生改成了修女[7]。2023年2月，阿尔法罗·莫特、贝妮黛塔·波卡洛利、朵拉·罗曼诺、乔治欧·克兰杰利和席梦娜·塔巴斯科加入演出阵容[12][13]。同月，电影在罗马[12]完成主要拍摄[14]。

在美国和加拿大，《鬼圣胎》与《捉鬼敢死队：冰天冻地》和《魔鬼深夜秀》一起上映，预计首映周末在2354家影院获得约500万美元的票房[19]。本片首日票房为200万美元，首映票房为530万美元，排名当周票房排名第四，创下Neon史上最佳首映周末成绩[20][4]。

《鬼圣胎》在烂番茄网站上根据148位影评人，新鲜度达71%，平均评分为6.4／10；该网站共识评论：“《鬼圣胎》构思完美，在执行上却并非如此，所幸席妮·史威尼的精彩表演挽救了这场以宗教为主题的恐怖之旅。”[21]根据39位影评人打分的Metacritic得分为57，代表“好坏参半或一般”的评价[22]。据CinemaScore的民意调查，观众的口碑在A+至F间落于“C”，而PostTrak则调查出观众的好评度为52%，其中30%的人表示予以推荐[20]。
