美軍女兵琳賽在阿富汗執勤時遭遇簡易爆炸裝置爆炸，穿上創傷性腦損傷，被迫回到老家紐奧良修養[4]。由於一直希望回歸戰場，琳賽難以適應平靜的日常生活。醫生認為腦損傷極有可能造成她的抑鬱症狀，不願意簽署棄權聲明書，讓她回歸部隊。康復過程中，琳賽與汽修工詹姆士意外成為朋友。詹姆士一次與侄子在龐恰特雷恩湖堤道（Lake Pontchartrain Causeway）行車時遭遇車禍，侄子當場身亡，詹姆士則落下身體及心理創傷。電影片名「堤道」（Causeway）隱喻了片中的旅程，導演內格鮑爾解釋說「開車經過堤道是很嚇人的事情，因為你不覺得災難會降臨[5]。」

2019年4月，消息指珍妮佛·勞倫斯和布萊恩·泰瑞·亨利將出演一部未定名的劇情片，莉拉·內格鮑爾（英語：Lila Neugebauer）導演，伊莉莎白·桑德斯編劇。勞倫斯、賈斯汀·恰羅基（Justine Ciarrocchi）、伊萊·布希（英語：Eli Bush）和史考特·魯丁分別通過旗下的Excellent Cadaver（英語：Excellent Cadaver）和IAC影業出任製片人，A24參與發行[6][7]。

主體拍攝原計劃於2019年夏季在紐奧良展開，其後因為颶風巴瑞推遲。後來又於2020年3月重啟，但由碰上2019冠狀病毒病疫情，最終延宕至2021年夏季才殺青[8]。之後勞倫斯和亨利繼續對劇本進行預演，以增加兩人在戲中的默契，進一步豐富劇本，而兩人的戲份被認為是全片最大的看頭[1]。
