1994年7月27日，尚黛尔·布朗-杨生于加拿大安大略省多伦多，[2]母亲丽莎·布朗（Lisa Brown）及父亲温莎·杨（Windsor Young）皆为牙买加裔，[2]哈洛有两名姊妹。[3]她在4岁时被诊断出患有慢性皮肤疾病白癜风，皮肤部分部位因为脱色（英语：depigmentation）而出现斑痕。哈洛年幼时遭受同侪以“乳牛”、“斑马”等词汇恶意嘲笑，[2]致使她在求学阶段多次转学，高中时更遭到退学，甚至萌生自杀的念头。[2][3]

哈洛在Instagram上被《全美超模大赛》的主持人泰拉·班克斯发掘，随后便在2014年加入第21季的14名参赛者之一，成为该节目至今首位且是唯一的一名加拿大籍参赛者。[4]她在决赛第二周（第四集）遭到淘汰，[5]不过，她仍继续参与“复活赛”，与该季其他被淘汰的参赛者角逐重回赛场的资格。哈洛在观众投票中获得最高票，重新回到决赛。[6]最终，她于第13集再度遭到淘汰，获得该季比赛的第6名。[6]
