卫矛科有大约90-100属，约1,300余种，大部分分布在热带地区，只有卫矛属和南蛇藤属分布在温带地区。中国有12属，200余种。
本科植物主要为木质藤本、灌木或小乔木，也有一些比较高大的树，如丝棉木等。本科植物叶为单叶，互生或对生；花小，一般为淡绿色，有一个花盘，雄蕊生在花盘上或边缘，聚伞花序；果实一般有肉质颜色鲜艳的假种皮。有许多种植物都可作为药用。
