The article as currently written suggests that the word "Franzosenkrankheit" was used for syphilis only if it was contracted in that area of Strasbourg. That seems a bit odd to me. The German-language article on Strasbourg (de:Straßburg#Sehenswürdigkeiten und Baudenkmäler) says there used to be a military hospital on the island where German soldiers were treated for syphilis.
