本属由瑞典动物学家第七代阿普尔加思从男爵威廉·渣甸及普里多·约翰·塞尔比于1830年时建立。[5]其模式种由英国动物学家乔治·罗伯特·格雷后续于1840年指定为赤须夜蜂虎。[1][6]其属名Nyctyornis来自古希腊语的νυκτὶ（罗马化：nukti-，意指“晚上、夜间的”）及ὄρνις（罗马化：ornis，意指“鸟”）组成。[7]
形态特征[编辑]
本属鸟类是体型较大的蜂虎，其中蓝须夜蜂虎更是当中体型最大的蜂虎，其体型可达31—34厘米，重量可超过80公克。[3]:242[8]:287其特征为没有贯穿于眼部的条纹，这是蜂虎科下其他两属鸟类都拥有的特征，而喉咙的羽毛则形成了类似胡须的结构。[4][8]:292本属的鸟类捕食时飞行动作不如其他蜂虎优雅，往往是在空中单独追逐著黄蜂、胡蜂或虎头蜂，其他时间则蹲坐于树枝上不动；而其叫声也较类似于三宝鸟科的鸟类而不接近其他蜂虎。[3]:241-244[8]:287
