蒺藜科只有30屬大約250種，主要分布在熱帶、亞熱帶、溫帶的乾旱地區，中國有5屬，主要分布在西北和北方較乾旱地區。克朗奎斯特分類法將其分入無患子目，但2003年根據基因分類的APG II 分類法沒有將其分入任何一目，只是I類真薔薇分支中的一個獨立科，也可以單獨列為一個「蒺藜目」，刺球果科也可以單獨列為一科也可和蒺藜科合併[1]。在隨後的APG III 分類法中本科與刺球果科列入蒺藜目[2]。在APG IV 分類法中此分類保持不變[3]。
本科植物一般為灌木，也有少數是喬木或多年生草本植物，葉為兩個至多數的羽狀複葉，托葉成對；花兩性，雄蕊花絲基部有鱗狀附屬物；果實為蒴果，稀為漿果或核果。
本科植物多數是重要的防風固沙植物，有的品種種子可榨取工業用油或提取染料。
