在2008年Kerrang!的採訪中，托馬斯·霍洛帕尼回憶道：「為四張專輯做這種真正的管弦樂和交響樂，你就必須為接下來行動採取準備，而且要準備10步開外，我們就是這樣告別倫敦交響樂團的。在當時，我們的確有財力這麼做。這就像我們的第二次突破性進展；Oceanborn（1998年）讓我們走紅，並把我們帶入了一流的陣營。在我們看來，音樂方面可說是相當悠閒，因為樂隊的每個人都真正了解自己的風格。所以我們基本上花了兩天時間，躺在沙發上，享受這些人演奏我們的歌，享受每一刻。這是我生命中最奇妙的經歷之一。他們演奏最早演奏的歌曲是《Ghost Love Score》，我們不知道這會發生什麼，但我只是想：這不可能發生！」[3]

專輯延續了上張專輯《Century Child》中更簡化的音樂方法，並更加淡化了早期專輯中以力量金屬為主風格的影響，專輯顯得更平易近人。和上張專輯《Century Child》中11首歌有9首採用了全管弦樂不同，在本張專輯中管弦樂由非芬蘭的倫敦愛樂樂團負責。而在夜願的第六章專輯《Dark Passion Play》中，亦採用了這種方法[4] 。

《Once》收錄了一首芬蘭語《Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan》，這是他們第二張收錄長度完整芬蘭語歌曲的專輯[4]。樂隊還為這首專輯增添了新的元素，如加入即興合唱和鼓點合成的《Wish I Had an Angel》，以及融入美洲土著氣道吟詠的《Creek Mary's Blood》[4]。歌曲《Ghost Love Score》正如其名所暗示的，充分顯示了管弦樂隊和夜願的合作[4]。
