《美国偶像》第九季于2010年1月12日在FOX播出。[2]Simon Cowell、Randy Jackson和Kara DioGuardi继续作为评委，Ellen DeGeneres将替代Paula Abdul成为第四位评委。[1]Idol Gives Back也将在本季回归，并将于2010年4月21日七强结果秀举行。[3]在第四季至第七季被使用的24强半决赛的形式也将在本季使用。[4]本赛季将是Simon Cowell作为美国偶像评委的最后一个赛季。[5]
评委变动[编辑]
赛季开始后，宝拉·阿巴杜并没有出现在评委小组中。[6]因为合同谈判遇到的问题没有被解决，维多利亚·贝克汉姆、玛丽·布莱姬、莎妮娅·特温、姬蒂·佩芮、艾薇儿·拉维尼、乔·强纳斯、尼尔·帕特里克·夏里斯和克莉丝汀·钱诺维斯在海选阶段担任了客串评委。[7][8][9][10] 在做出了利用客串评委的决定之后，FOX主席彼得·瑞斯（Peter Rice）指出将于本季在一月播出之前寻找一位固定的第四评委，[11]随后在2009年9月9日艾伦·德杰尼勒斯确认，她将成为新的固定评委，并将参与在CBS电视城录制的好莱坞周比赛以及随后的比赛。[12]
同时，西门·考尔在2010年1月第九季开播之前宣布，他将在本季之后离开美国偶像，以便将他在英国的节目X Factor引入美国。目前为止没有任何迹象显示谁将接任他成为第十季的评委。[13]

- 参赛者在2009年6月12日的年龄必须是16岁至28岁，且必须具有在美国工作的资格。

好莱坞周[编辑]
本季的好莱坞周在柯达剧院举行。Ellen DeGeneres在本环节正式出任美国偶像的评委。
好莱坞周的第一、二天由181位参赛者（目前美国偶像网站显示为172位参赛者[20]）各自进行了演唱，他们可以自行选择是否使用乐器。[21]96位参赛者获得了通过。
接下来，选手们依照要求进行了分组表演。71位参赛者获得通过，进入到下一轮的独唱表演。
根据在独唱表演中的表现，评委将选手分为三组，并最终留下了两组选手共计46名。最终，评委从这46名选手中选拔出了TOP 24的24名选手（12名女性、12名男性）。

准决赛进程[编辑]
在第四季至第七季被使用的24强半决赛的形式在本季使用。12名女选手、12名男选手每周分别进行比赛，并于每周的结果秀中淘汰得票垫底得两名女选手和两名男选手。进行三周准决赛后，形成6男6女组成的TOP 12阵容。
