該書構思於1997年[2]，為此他進行了三年深入研究，其中包括了15次野外考察及大量植物標本館參觀的成果。[1][3]但也遇到了一些困難與挫折，其中包括1997年的「嚴重乾旱」及接下來連續兩年的政治動盪。[2]該屬包含的所有介紹到的物種中，查爾斯·克拉克僅在野外實地見到了3種。[1]因亞齊省部分地區政治局勢動盪，熔岩豬籠草（N. lavicola）所在地已不可觸及，而細豬籠草（N. tenuis）的所在地在當時還未重新定位。[1]查爾斯·克拉克所謂的瘦小豬籠草（N. gracillima），他也未在野外見到過；而該類群現已被確認為白豬籠草（N. alba）。[4]

該書詳細描述了34個物種。還包括了2個「未描述及未完全鑑定的類群」：「Nepenthes species A」（之後被描述為硬葉豬籠草（N. rigidifolia））[5]和「Nepenthes species B」（之後被描述為泉氏豬籠草（N. izumiae））[6]。及3個「鮮為人知的類群」：翼狀豬籠草（N. alata，之後被證明並不存在於該地區）、貝卡利豬籠草（N. beccariana）和容洪豬籠草（N. junghuhnii）。該專著還包含了18個自然雜交種的簡短描述。[1]
查爾斯·克拉克撤銷了馬修·傑布和馬丁·奇克在其1997年的專著——《豬籠草屬（豬籠草科）的框架性修訂》中的幾處分類修訂。具體即是恢復長葉豬籠草（N. longifolia）、塔藍山豬籠草（N. talangensis）和細豬籠草（N. tenuis）的物種地位，同時將梳狀豬籠草（N. pectinata）視為裸瓶豬籠草（N. gymnamphora）的同物異名。此外，查爾斯·克拉克還以他妻子的名字命名了一個新物種——賈桂琳豬籠草（N. jacquelineae）。[1][7]其還選取了18個自然雜交種做了簡要說明。[1]

分類學家簡·斯洛爾在2002年3月的《食蟲植物通訊》中對《蘇門答臘島與西馬來西亞的豬籠草》進行了評述：[注 1][8]
