棘鳄龙属（属名：Spinosuchus）意为“有棘的鳄鱼”，是种已灭绝爬行动物，生存于三叠纪晚期的德州，分类倾向不明。在分类历史中，棘鳄龙曾多次被归类于不同的演化支，例如：腔骨龙科、伪鳄类、不确定的兽脚亚目恐龙、古鳄科、以及可能的三棱龙目。棘鳄龙分类上的不确定性，导因于保存不好的化石，只留下部分脊椎，加上它们的生存时期有多样化、所知有限的爬行动物演化支。

在1922年，Ermin C. Case叙述了一个部分脊椎（编号UMMP 7507），该化石发现于德州克劳斯贝郡的Dockum组，年代为上三叠纪卡尼阶；Ermin C. Case将它们归类于腔骨龙的一种，但当时对于腔骨龙的所知有限[1]。他认为该动物的身长约2.5米[1]。其他的化石材料也被归类于此，包含一个股骨（编号UMMP 3396）[1]、一个肠骨（编号UMMP 8870）、以及一个头盖骨基部（编号UMMP 7473） [2]。这些额外的化石现在已被归类于不同的三叠纪动物，这些动物在当时所知有限，或是不被了解；股骨被归类于坚蜥目，可能为链鳄[3]；肠骨被归类于艾雷拉龙下目，可能为钦迪龙或盒龙[4]；而头盖骨基部则被归类于劳氏鳄目的波斯特鳄[5]。
在1932年，德国古生物学家休尼博士将这动物建立为新属棘鳄龙（Spinosuchus），并以Ermin C. Case作为种名[6]。他认为棘鳄龙属于快足龙科[6]。但自从1970年以来，棘鳄龙被认为不属于恐龙[7][8][9]。然而，阿德里安·亨特（Adrian Hunt）等人的1998年研究根据它们的中空脊椎，认为棘鳄龙属于兽脚亚目，可能是艾雷拉龙科[3]。在1999年度的脊椎动物化石学会会议与非正式的论文中，Richards认为棘鳄龙所拥有的不同衍征，与不同的恐龙次演化支相符合，但也可见于不同的基础主龙类演化支；而保存不好而且扭曲的脊椎，并没有足够证据可归类于任何一个主龙类的主要演化支，但与三棱龙目有某些相似点[10][11]S。terling Nesbitt、Randall Irmis、以及William Parkers发表了一系列关于三叠纪恐龙演化的研究，他们认为棘鳄龙是个有效属。然而，他们将棘鳄龙归类于主龙形类，而非Richards所主张的三棱龙目[12]。但究竟它是什么则需更多的骨骸才能确定[13]。在2009年，Justin Spielmann等人发现棘鳄龙是三棱龙的近亲，将棘鳄龙归类于三棱龙目[14]。
