直背假鳃鳉，为辐鳍鱼纲鲤齿目鰕鳉亚目鰕鳉科的其中一种，为热带淡水鱼，分布于非洲马拉维、莫桑比克、津巴布韦与南非淡水流域，于1844年由Wilhelm Peters描述为Cyprinodon orthonotus，模式产地为莫桑比克东部的克利马内^[2]。本鱼体粗壮，身体底色为淡蓝色至绿色，鳞框为红色，形成网状纹，鱼鳍末端为红色，体长可达10公分，栖息在季节性的水塘、溪流、沟渠底中层水域，以孑孓等为食，鱼卵可以在长时间脱水的情况下存活，雨季开始时孵化，并继续快速生长。几周内，达到性成熟，并且每天繁殖，雌鱼每天产下多达50个卵，属肉食性，以昆虫幼虫、肺鱼幼鱼为食^[3]，生活习性不明，可作为观赏鱼。
