2017年11月24日歐洲東部時間下午1:50，拉瓦達清真寺在星期五禮拜活動期間遭到大約四十名槍手的襲擊。該清真寺位於埃及北西奈省比爾阿比德鎮東邊。它是蘇菲派賈里里亞教團主要清真寺之一，該教團是北西奈省最大的蘇菲教團。賈里里亞教團的名字源於創始人，謝赫艾德·阿爾-賈里里。他是薩瓦卡部落和賈拉家族的成員。賈里里家族居住在附近的比爾阿貝德。[4][5]此次襲擊造成至少309人死亡，128多人受傷，成為埃及歷史上最致命的襲擊事件。[1]這是繼10月14日摩加迪沙爆炸案之後，2017年迄今為止第二大致命的恐怖襲擊。[6]

拉瓦達清真寺屬於當地Jreer氏族，位於通往加沙的主要沿海高速公路上。[7]清真寺位於阿里什和比爾阿比德之間的道路上。[8]

據當地媒體報導，襲擊者在四輛越野車上放置了兩枚炸彈。當局在現場解釋了襲擊者是如何使用燃燒的汽車殘骸來封鎖逃生路線的。他們引爆炸彈後，向在拉瓦達清真寺進行周五禮拜擁擠的禮拜者中發射了火箭彈和開火。[7]當救護車到達運送傷員到醫院時，襲擊者也向他們開火，並選擇了伏擊點來襲擊他們。當地居民迅速作出反應，用自己的汽車和卡車把傷員送到醫院，甚至拿起武器進行反擊。[2][9][10][11][12]

埃及當局迅速要求反擊，空軍聲稱對部分武裝分子的車輛進行追擊和摧毀。空襲也在該鎮周圍的山區進行。[14][15]

截止襲擊當天19:30EET，中東社報導，襲擊已造成至少235人死亡、109人受傷，其中包括27名兒童，至少有30輛救護車響應。[2][16][17][18][19]許多受害者在附近的鹽礦工作，他們在清真寺做周五的祈禱。[7]到第二天，死亡人數上升到305人。

據國家電視台報導，埃及在襲擊事件發生後宣布了三天的全國哀悼日。埃及總統阿卜杜勒-法塔赫·塞西表示，這次襲擊「不會逍遙法外」，埃及衛生部稱此事為「恐怖襲擊」。[20]總統還下令政府撥款補償死者家屬。[20]埃及議員穆斯塔法·巴克利稱此次襲擊為「大屠殺」。[21]

穆斯林兄弟會在Twitter和Facebook寫到「強烈譴責」襲擊事件，並表示那些負責的人應該「放棄極端主義和暴力」。[22][23]埃及最古老的學位授予大學艾資哈爾大學發表聲明譴責襲擊事件，稱「恐怖主義將被擊潰」。[24]
