孟加拉族主要分布于历史上和地理上的孟加拉地区，包括今孟加拉国与印度西孟加拉邦等邦。孟加拉族讲孟加拉语，孟加拉语属雅利安语支，自摩揭陀语梵文和梵语演变；诸如此类语言归类为孟加拉语，他们自称为为（读班加利）。其起初属于雅利安语和蒙古-达罗毗荼语，和南亚语、达罗毗荼语、阿萨姆语、僧伽罗语、蒙达里语及藏缅语族有亲缘关系。和语言的特点一样，孟加拉族是汇合多种起源的民族形成的民族。全球孟加拉族约有2.3亿人口。主要分布在孟加拉国和印度西孟加拉邦等邦，还有一些分布在巴基斯坦等国家。孟加拉国的孟加拉族主要信仰伊斯兰教，印度的孟加拉族主要印度教。另有少数的孟加拉族信仰佛教或基督教。
