1979年，道森出生在美国纽约州纽约市，她的母亲伊莎贝尔·塞莱斯特是一个作家、歌手，而且是波多黎各移民的后裔，她的父亲是帕特里克·C·哈里斯。[2][3]
她的母亲18岁时，嫁给了格雷格·道森，一个建筑工人，他爱妻子就像爱自己的女儿。[2]
道森有一个兄弟叫“格雷”，还只有4岁，她的父母在2006年离婚。

2004年，道森和《欲望都市》中的明星杰森·刘易斯同居，两人在2006年分手。[4]
