林鸮属的体型中等至大型，身体较为粗壮。它们没有耳羽，大部份都是夜间活动及栖息在林地。它们主要吃细小的哺乳动物、鸟类及爬行类。
虽然卡尔·林奈于1758年将所有没有耳羽的猫头鹰分类到林鸮属中，但有很多学者在19世纪前都误将草鸮属分类到林鸮属中。[1]

化石物种[编辑]
林鸮属有很多化石纪录。它们可能是最早演化出来的猫头鹰。不过，有些物种并不能确定是否应分类到林鸮属中。
一般已接受的林鸮属如下：
- Strix dakota：属于早中新世，在美国南达科他州发现；[2]
- Strix未命名种：属于晚中新世，在美国内布拉斯加州发现；
- Strix未命名种：属于晚上新世，在波兰发现；[1]
- Strix intermedia：属于早至中更新世，在欧洲发现；有可能是灰林鸮的古亚种；[3]
- Strix brea：属于晚更新世，在北美洲西南部发现；[4][5]
- Strix未命名种：属于晚更新世，在美国发现。
在德国发现属于中新世早期至晚期的"Strix" wintershofensis及在法国发现属于中新世中期的"Strix" edwardsi虽然是属于鸱鸮科，但并未肯定是属于林鸮属。在法国发现属于中新世中期的"Strix" ignota有时会被误认是裸名。[6][7]它有可能是属于林鸮属，但需更多证据支持。[1]
在义大利发现属于中新世晚期至上新世早期的"Strix" perpasta似乎并不属于此属[2]它有时被认为是褐鱼鸮古亚种的异名。[1]
在美国堪萨斯州发现属于上新世晚期的喙突（化石编号UMMP V31030）并未能肯定分类到此属或雕鸮属中。[8]
- "Strix" antiqua：现分类到Prosybris；
- "Strix" brevis：现分类到Intutula；
- "Strix" collongensis：现分类到Alasio；
- "Strix" melitensis及"Strix" sanctialbani：：现分类到草鸮属；
- "Strix" murivora：是Mascarenotus murivorus的雄鸟；
- "Strix" newtoni及"Strix" sauzieri：是Mascarenotus sauzieri的雄鸟和雌鸟。
