银河帝国覆灭五年之后[b]，一位以赏金猎人为业的曼达洛人在酒店与人争斗之后，抓获目标，将其带至自己的飞船“刀锋之巅”（Razor Crest）。他驾驶飞船躲掉冰面下巨大生物的攻击，从公会首领格里夫·卡加处得到一笔数额低廉的佣金。曼达洛人为了获取高额奖金，从卡加口中得知一位仅提供地址的神秘客户。

这名客户雇佣帝国风暴兵担当保镖。他希望能够秘密执行任务，提供给曼达洛人关于抓捕目标的信息非常有限，仅告诉他目标年约50岁，以及目标最后出现的地点，但他要求将目标活著带回来。客户给予他一块稀有的金属材料曼达洛铁作为订金，并承诺事成之后另有一桶曼达洛铁奉上。曼达洛人来到曼达洛族的居住地，找到一名军械员。军械员将铁块熔化，为曼达洛人打造一个新护肩，多馀的铁块用于救助曼达洛孤儿。

曼达洛人来到一个沙漠星球Arvala-7，遇到当地土著居民奎伊尔。奎伊尔想要驱逐搬迁至此落脚的恶徒和雇佣军，因此乐意帮助曼达洛人抓捕目标。由于当地没有飞行摩托，他教会曼达洛人骑乘动物布勒格。两人前往目标所在地，曼达洛人发现机器人IG-11也来到此处，它也是一名赏金猎人。两人组队消灭守卫之后，发现所寻找的目标是与尤达同族的浑身泛绿、长耳、只有婴儿大小的孩子。IG-11打算杀死这个孩子，曼达洛人在IG-11动手前一枪打爆了它。
