大西洋鯡學名Clupea harengus)是地球上資源最豐富的魚類之一,在大西洋的東西兩部分都可以發現集成一大群的大西洋鯡。 成魚可以長至45厘米長(大約18英寸), 重半公斤左右。它們以小型甲殼類動物、磷蝦和小魚為食,也是海豹鱈魚和其他大型肉食魚類等天然掠食者的食物。

大西洋鯡很長時間以來是新英格蘭加拿大沿海省份經濟的重要組成部分。這是因為大西洋鯡經常在相對近岸的海區聚集成海量的一大群,尤其是在緬因灣半封閉的冷水區和聖勞倫斯灣中。大西洋鯡魚群經測量尺寸達到4立方千米,由大約40億條魚組成。

生態學上的重要性[編輯]

鯡魚類是地球上最重要的魚種 ,其中最常被提及的就是大西洋鯡(吉尼斯世界紀錄)。它們在轉換浮游生物的產物,維持遠洋帶中甲殼類生物、糖蝦和磷蝦的生物總量上起着舉足輕重的作用。另一方面,它們也是更高一層食物鏈上生物的主要食物。大西洋鯡在生態學上所起的作用如此重要,但是人類還未完全探明其中的原因。一個可能的推測是,它們在生態學作用上起到的支配作用來自於它們生活在海量的並快速游動的群體中的習性。

地理上的分布[編輯]

大西洋鯡在大西洋的東西岸都可以發現。它們的分布區域相當之廣,從北大西洋水域如緬因灣聖勞倫斯灣芬迪灣拉布拉多海戴維斯海峽波弗特海丹麥海峽挪威海北海波羅的海英吉利海峽凱爾特海愛爾蘭海比斯開灣。雖然大西洋鯡在大西洋北部北冰洋周圍的海域能被發現,但人們並不認為它們是一個在北冰洋生存的物種。

而大西洋鯡在波羅的海一帶有一個學名為Clupea harengus membras的亞種,它在瑞典語中被稱為strömming(普通大西洋鯡則被稱作sill),體型比一般的大西洋鯡小。瑞典鹽醃鯡魚正是由這種波羅的海鯡魚製成的。

特徵[編輯]

鯡魚形成了最為壯觀的集群魚類。它們聚集成一個由千百萬個體形成的魚群。 這些魚群橫渡大洋。一個鯡魚群在總體上有非常精確的安排,以使魚群能夠維持一個相對穩定的巡遊速度。由成千上萬個個體組成的魚群一般循一個三角形路線在它們的產卵地、索餌場和育苗場進行遷徙。其目的是爲了保證後代得到充足的食物。

一個鯡魚群能做出很快的反應以規避捕食者;它們有很敏銳的聽覺。在潛水員和無人遙控潛水器的周圍,魚群能形成一個完全沒有任何個體在內的空間,類似一個液泡。對此有很多解釋:比如為了迷惑捕食者、為了將減少被個體被發現的危險、更好定位方向等等。同時集群生活也有不利的一面,比如氧氣和食物的消耗過多,排泄物也會在呼吸介質中積累。

棲地條件[編輯]

大西洋鯡一般而言是非常脆弱的魚,他們有特別大且敏感的表面,接觸異物可能會使他們失去鱗片。雖然在一些被清潔過的河口可以觀察到大西洋鯡的回流,但因為水中的高度污染使他們從世界各地的河口撤離,幼魚的出現被作為水質潔淨度和含氧量的生物指標。
