南极交响曲

南极交响曲（意大利语：Sinfonia antartica，英语：Antarctic Symphony）是英国作曲家沃恩·威廉斯的交响作品，创作于1949至52年。是他的第7号交响曲，但正如他其他以标题命名的交响曲一样，普遍都不会以编号来称呼。

背景

1947年，沃恩·威廉斯为电影《南极的史葛船长》创作配乐，因而对南极这个题裁非常感兴趣，当完成了配乐后，便着手以当中的旋律，另外谱写这首乐曲。乐曲是题献给另一位英国专长谱写电影配乐的作曲家恩斯特·厄文。

乐曲于1953年1月14日于曼彻斯特举行，担任指挥的是约翰·巴比罗利，由哈莱乐团演奏。4月2日再由芝加哥交响乐团及库贝里克作美国首演。

乐队编制

香港管弦乐团于2013年演奏《南极交响曲》时所使用的风鸣器。

• 木管乐器：短笛（兼任第3长笛）、2长笛、2双簧管、英国管、2单簧管、低音单簧管、2巴松管、低音巴松管
• 铜管乐器：4圆号、3小号、3长号、大号
• 敲击乐器：定音鼓、大鼓、中鼓、小鼓、钹、三角铁、锣、钟、钟琴、木琴、颤音琴、风鸣器
• 键盘乐器：钢琴、钢片琴、管风琴（只在第3乐章）
• 弦乐器：第1小提琴、第2小提琴、中提琴、大提琴、低音提琴、竖琴
• 声乐（只在第1、5乐章）：女高音独唱、三部女声合唱小组，另再加一位旁述，于每个乐章演奏前朗读相关的金句语录。

乐曲结构

全首交响曲共分为五个乐章，沃恩·威廉斯特意为每一个乐章都加添了一段朗读段落，并由一个旁述，于每个乐章演奏前朗读。内容选自英国的短诗、圣经、以及史葛船长所撰写的日志内容等。官方的演奏时间为42分钟。

• 第1乐章：前奏（Prelude）：Andante maestoso，3/4 及 4/4
• 第2乐章：谐跃曲（Scherzo）：中速（Moderato），6/8，9/8 及 3/4
• 第3乐章：风景（Landscape）：Lento，4/4 及 3/2；直落（Segue）
• 第4乐章：间奏（Intermezzo）：Andante maestoso，3/4 及 4/4
• 第5乐章：后奏（Epilogue）：Alla marcia, moderato (non troppo allegro)，4/4 及 3/4

　I do not regret this journey; we took risks, we knew we took them, things have come out against us, therefore we have no cause for complaint.

轶事

• 在首演时，宣传单张把“南极”一词的意大利文串错，变成了“Antarctica”，直至差不多公演时才发觉出错而要作出修正。
• 乐曲于1956年6月21日于南极哈雷海湾（Halley Bay）的皇家学会南极研究基地（Royal Society Antarctic Expedition's Base）内作过演出。
