枪嘴翼龙属（学名：Lonchodectes）是翼龙目的一属，化石发现于英格兰的数个地层，大多数来自于东南部肯特郡，地质年代相当于白垩纪晚期的土仑阶，部分化石可能来自于白垩纪早期的凡蓝今阶。枪嘴翼龙是在20世纪初期被命名，但早期研究历史中，常被归类于鸟掌翼龙的一个种。直到大卫·安文（David Unwin）在最近20年的研究，枪嘴翼龙再度被认为是独立属，但目前还没有被普遍接受[1]。近年有许多零碎化石被建立为个别种，过去多属于其他属。枪嘴翼龙与许多英格兰、巴西的白垩纪早期翼龙类，有交错、复杂的分类历史，例如︰古魔翼龙、残喙翼龙、鸟掌翼龙、Amblydectes、以及槌喙龙与脊颌翼龙。
发现与命名历史[编辑]
正模标本（BMNH 39410）是一个部分上颌，发现于英格兰肯特郡，地质年代为白垩纪晚期的土仑阶。在1851年，古生物学家理查·欧文将这个化石归类于翼手龙属的一个种，P. compressirostris[2]。在1870年，哈利·丝莱（Harry Govier Seeley）将这个种改归类于鸟掌翼龙，成为O. compressirostris[3]。在1914年，雷金纳德·胡利（Reginald Walter Hooley）重新研究鸟掌翼龙时，将这个种建立为新属，模式种是Lonchodectes compressirostris。属名是由“长枪”与“咬人的动物”所构成[4]。自从被建立为独立属后，枪嘴翼龙仍多被视为鸟掌翼龙的一个种，甚至是鸟掌翼龙的模式种[5]。
雷金纳德·胡利命名枪嘴翼龙时，将两个种也归类到这个新属，这两个种都是先后被归类于翼手龙属、鸟掌翼龙。L. giganteus，化石是颌部碎片，生存年代是森诺曼阶[6]。L. daviesii，化石也是颌部碎片，生存年代是阿尔比阶[7]。
自从大卫·安文（David Unwin）在最近20年的研究，枪嘴翼龙再度被认为是独立属，而许多翼手龙属、鸟掌翼龙的种，被改归类于枪嘴翼龙。L. sagittirostris的化石是一个下颌碎片，发现于东萨塞克斯郡的黑斯廷斯，地质年代可能是白垩纪早期的凡蓝今阶到豪特里维阶交界[7]；以及L. platystomus都在2000年被改归类于枪嘴翼龙[3][8]。在2003年，L. machaerorhynchus、L. microdon也被归类于枪嘴翼龙，两者都是发现于剑桥海绿石砂的零碎化石，地质年代为白垩纪早期的阿尔比阶[3] [9]。在大卫·安文的2006年研究中，将这五个种列为有效种[10]。
分类[编辑]
枪嘴翼龙的化石零碎，因此并没有被普遍接受为有效属。彼得·沃尔赫费尔（Peter Wellnhofer）在1991年出版的翼龙类科普书籍《The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs》，将枪嘴翼龙视为鸟掌翼龙的一种，而且是其模式种，其中对鸟掌翼龙的大部份描述，其实是根据枪嘴翼龙的化石[11]。在2003年，大卫·安文建立枪嘴翼龙科（Lonchodectidae），以包含枪嘴翼龙属；并将枪嘴翼龙科归类于梳颌翼隆超科[9]。之后在2006年，大卫·安文将枪嘴翼龙科改归类于神龙翼龙超科；神龙翼龙超科也包含神龙翼龙科、古神翼龙科[10]。
古生物学[编辑]
枪嘴翼龙的翼展估计约2公尺。上颌、下颌扁平，嘴部具有许多短牙齿。颌部与牙齿形状类似年代较早的翼手龙属。大卫·安文推测枪嘴翼龙是种无特定食物来源的动物，如同现代海鸥[12]。某些种的下颌具有中线隆脊[13]。
