菲臘·西摩·荷夫曼 (1967–2014) was an American actor, director, and producer who made his screen debut on the police procedural 法律與秩序 in 1991.[1] He made his film debut later in the same year by appearing in a minor role in Triple Bogey on a Par Five Hole（英語：Triple Bogey on a Par Five Hole）.[2] Hoffman followed this with supporting roles as a student in 女人香 (1992年電影) (1992),[3] and a 追風 (惡劣氣候) in 龍捲風 (電影) (1996) before his breakthrough role as a gay boom operator（英語：Boom operator (media)） in 保羅·湯馬士·安德遜's drama Boogie Nights（英語：Boogie Nights） (1997), for which he received critical acclaim.[4] In the same year, he appeared in the 美國獨立戰爭 documentary series Liberty!（英語：Liberty!） (1997). Two years later, he played a kind nurse in Anderson's 人生交叉剔 (電影) and an arrogant playboy in 心計, for which he received the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor（英語：National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor）.[5] Hoffman made his 百老匯劇院 debut the following year with his lead role in True West（英語：True West (play)） which garnered him a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play（英語：Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play）.[6]

Hoffman received the 奧斯卡最佳男主角獎, 英國電影學院獎最佳男主角, and 金球獎劇情類電影最佳男主角 for his portrayal of writer 杜魯門·冷血字傳 in the 2005 biographical film 冷血字傳.[7][8] He followed this by playing a ruthless arms dealer in the action spy film 職業特工隊3 (2006) and CIA agent Gust Avrakotos（英語：Gust Avrakotos） in the 米克·尼高斯-directed 韋氏風雲 (2007).[9] Hoffman's performance as a priest suspected of child abuse in the period drama 聖訴 (2008) with 梅麗·史翠普 and 愛美·雅當絲 received critical acclaim and multiple award nominations in the Best Supporting Actor category.[9][10][11][12] In the same year, he played a troubled theatre director in 查理·卡夫曼's Synecdoche, New York（英語：Synecdoche, New York）.[13]

In 2010, he made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy 傑克去划船, an adaptation of the 2007 play（英語：Jack Goes Boating (play)） in which he had also starred. Two years later, he played a cult leader in Anderson's psychological drama 大師 (電影) and Willy Loman in the play 推銷員之死.[14] For the former, Hoffman was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and for the latter he received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.[15][16] He died of an accidental mixed drug overdose on February 2, 2014, at the age of 46.[17] In his 紐約時報 obituary, he was described as "perhaps the most ambitious and widely admired American actor of his generation".[18] Broadway theatres dimmed their lights for one minute in tribute.[19]
