MX Linux是一个中量级的GNU/Linux发行版[2]。其基于Debian稳定版本开发，使用了antiX的核心组件，并可安装MX社区开发或打包的软件[3]。MX Linux是antiX和早前的MEPIS社区合作开发的产物，旨在使用各自系统中最优秀的工具和软件[4]。MX社区的既定目标是“将优雅而高效的桌面与简单的配置、高度的稳定性、可靠的性能和中等的大小相结合”[4][5]。MX Linux使用Xfce作为默认桌面环境[6]。

历史

MX Linux的诞生始于2013年12月MEPIS社区成员之间的一次关于未来选择的讨论[4]。antiX的开发者随后加入该系统的开发工作，并且带来ISO映像架构方案以及Live-USB/Live-DVD技术。为了被列入DistroWatch，MX Linux起初以antiX的衍生版本的形式提供[7][8]。MX Linux于2016年11月2日发布了MX-16的第一个公共测试版，其后MX Linux作为独立的发行版而获得了自己的DistroWatch页面[4][9]。

MX-14系列基于Debian 7，并首先采用Xfce 4.10，其后MX-14.4采用Xfce 4.12[7][10]。MX-14系列要求使系统ISO映像的大小适应CD容量，这限制了系统中包含的应用程序的数量[11]。在该系列中，MX Tools逐步发展。MX Tools是一系列便捷的实用程序的集合，旨在帮助用户完成各种常见但复杂的任务[12]。

MX-15系列基于Debian 8，系统ISO映像的大小限制被解除，使得开发者可以给用户提供完整并可立即使用的操作系统[8]。MX Tools中的实用程序数量大幅增加[4][13]。

MX-16系列仍然基于Debian 8，但向后移植了许多应用程序，亦从其他来源添加了应用程序，并对MX Tools进行了补充和改进，导入了高级antiX开发工具、扩展支持以及全新的图标/主题包/桌面背景组合[14]。

MX-16.1包含了自MX-16以来的所有错误修复和改进，并添加了「翠鸟」主题包，升级且简化了MX Tools，修订了使用手册，并新增对用户界面的翻译[14]。

MX-17系列基于Debian 9，带来了改进的图形用户界面[15]、全新的MX Tools[16]和改进的Live CD操作[17][18][19][20]。

MX-18系列中，MX Tools得到进一步发展，引入了全新内核，支持将整个磁盘加密[21][22]。MX-18可通过MX Boot选项添加了grub主题包，亦改进了图形用户界面和本地化[23][24]。

MX-19系列基于Debian 10，其默认桌面环境更新至Xfce 4.14。此版本改进了用户工具、图标、使用手册和本地化等[25]。

MX-21系列基于Debian 11。MX-Fluxbox在先前版本中作为Xfce的附加组件提供，现在起则是完整的独立版本[26]。

特点

MX Linux通过内置一套名为MX Tools的用户工具集而从Linux发行版中脱颖而出[64]。MX Tools中，许多工具都是专为MX Linux开发的，而有些则是从antiX应用程序中分离出来的，有些是antiX上现有的应用程序，少数工具经许可而被引入[12]。例如，工具集中一个基于图形用户界面的工具MX-snapshot可用于将当前系统快照保存为ISO映像，这种系统映像可以从磁盘或U盘启动，同时保留设置及有用的文件，可作为方便而快速的备份[65][66][67]。
