Cryptocat 在2011年3月到2016年3月是一個開源的桌面應用程式，支持平台的加密在線聊天，也可以使用Chrome、Firefox和Safari的擴展程序。2016年3月推出桌面軟件支持Windows，OS X和Linux。在Cryptocat 所有通信均被端到端加密技術保護。支援群組聊天、檔案分享。

Cryptocat 由 Nadim Kobeissi 和一個開源社區開發，並根據GPLv3許可條款發佈。每個人皆能閱覽原始碼。

2019年2月，開發者在Twitter上宣佈Cryptocat停止開發。^[2]

Cryptocat於2011年5月19日推出應用拓展程序。

2012年6月，Kobeissi說他被國土安全部扣留在美國邊境，並質疑Cryptocat的審查抵抗。之後他發佈了關於此事件的推文，致媒體報道後軟件的普及程度也隨之上升。^[3]

2013年6月，安全研究員Steve Thomas指出了一個安全漏洞，此漏洞可用於解密2012年9月至2013年4月19日期間使用Cryptocat發生的任何群聊消息。^[4]私信不受影響，並且錯誤已在一個月前得到解決。作為回應，Cryptocat發佈了一份安全通報，要求所有用戶確保他們已升級，並通知用戶過去的群組對話可能已遭到入侵。
