夏威夷州位於美國西部，孤懸於太平洋中，距離美國本土大約2,000英里（3,200公里）。[1]自1959年八月建州以來[2][3]，夏威夷州共參與了16場美國總統選舉。在1960年美國總統選舉中，民主黨候選人約翰·甘迺迪以115票（得票率之差為0.06%）的微弱優勢擊敗了時任副總統的共和黨候選人理察·尼克森，贏得了夏威夷州的選舉人票。[4][5]而在1964年美國總統選舉中，民主黨候選人林登·詹森以得票率超過對手57.52%的優勢獲得了勝利[6]，是雙方差距最為懸殊的一次。自1960年以來，共和黨在夏威夷州只贏得了1972年和1984年這兩次總統選舉，而在這兩次選舉中，共和黨候選人在全國範圍內皆以壓倒性的優勢獲得了勝利。[7][8]

第三黨候選人在夏威夷得票率最高的總統選舉是1992年美國總統選舉，在這次選舉中獨立候選人羅斯·佩羅在夏威夷州的得票率為14.22%。[9]而在2016年美國總統選舉中，一名來自夏威夷州的失信選舉人[a]並沒有按要求將選票投給希拉蕊·柯林頓，而是支持伯尼·桑德斯成為總統，伊莉莎白·沃倫成為副總統。[11]因此希拉蕊·柯林頓與提姆·凱恩的組合只在夏威夷州獲得了3張選舉人票。[12]根據蓋洛普在2015年的一項調查結果顯示，夏威夷州是全美最傾向於民主黨的十個州之一。[13]

夏威夷州為全國普選票州際協定簽署州，該州際協定約定簽署州將其所有選舉人票投給總統選舉全國普選勝出者，即便其他候選人在個別簽署州普選勝出。截至2024年，該協定尚未施行。[14]
