The Warburg hypothesis, sometimes known as the Warburg theory of cancer, postulates that the driver of tumorigenesis is an insufficient cellular respiration caused by damaged mitochondria. The term Warburg effect describes the observation that cancer cells, and many cells grown in-vitro, exhibit glucose fermentation even when enough oxygen is present to properly respire. In other words, instead of fully respiring in the presence of adequate oxygen, cancer cells ferment. The Warburg hypothesis was that the Warburg effect was the root cause of cancer.

    • Wikidata will get dedicated database resources, and go read-only for 30 minutes on 9th January 2018 (phabricator:T181645)
    • There were no RDF dumps last week due to problems generating them, investigation is still going on (phabricator:T181385)
    • Improved the threshold for ORES on Wikidata (phabricator:T180450)
    • Working on fixing a regression after a change in MediaWiki core that makes edit links show up on diff pages (phabricator:T181807)
    • More work on persistent editing of statements on Forms of a Lexeme (specifically phabricator:T180467)
    • Improved size of the diff that we sent to Wikipedia and co for changes happening on Wikidata. This is one more needed step towards only showing meaningful edits in the watchlists and recent changes there. (phabricator:T113468)

  • MediaWiki的新版本將於12月5日部署於測試維基及MediaWiki.org。它將於12月6日部署至非維基百科wiki及部分維基百科，並於12月7日部署至所有wiki，參見日曆。
  • 古老版本的Opera網頁瀏覽器不再被支持。這意味着技術開發不再會在這些版本的Opera上進行測試。如果你遇到問題，請使用Opera 15以上版本或其他瀏覽器。 [4]

我倒是比較好奇，從收到投訴、調查、廣泛評價到多名基金會工作人員明確批准，基金會決定動用最後手段有三種情況：

  • 社群缺乏自我約束或採取行動來解決或緩解狀況的能力；
  • 所有可能由社群為主導應對狀況的努力都已進行過並且似乎失敗；
  • 基金會了解到我們不能公開的情況；此類情況可能包括但不限於涉及個人敏感信息，與正在進行的警方調查或法庭程序相關，或可能存在安全風險。

我剛剛想到，像維基百科:聚會/中國大陸社群聚會/2017年深圳暑假聚會所提到的「聲稱威脅愛孟的家人安全」之類的言論，如果情況屬實，不是也符合這三項要求，可以上報WMF尋求Global Ban嗎？為什麼不去做呢？就算英語不好，難道幾百個人的QQ群裏面就沒有一個願意幫手的人？難道WMF就不會提供進一步的援助？說不定過幾個月又再反轉一次，Lnnocentius一語成讖也是有可能的。--Xgsh（留言） 2017年12月5日 (二) 07:02 (UTC)

愛孟全域封禁一案之反思

非常遺憾得知愛孟被全域封禁。不少社群用戶都望其能（在遵守WP:CIVIL的前提下）回歸社群繼續貢獻，惟其故態復萌，違反使用條款而遭基金會全域封禁。

查基金會全域編輯禁制方針，其對於全域封禁的實施有着嚴格規範，並經多道覆核程序才最終定讞，故此決定應得到當事人的遵守以及社群的尊重。若有任何疑問、意見，請向 ca - at - wikimedia.org 提出，否則請勿橫生事端，使本已平息的社群紛爭死灰復燃。

全案肇始於當事人與社群中部分管理員之間的矛盾，後分歧逐漸擴大以致本地社群難以給出讓各方滿意的解決方案，故此案情上報至元維基。俗話說「家醜不可外揚」，一場本應由本地社群自行處理的風波何以在某些管理員對當事人持續人身攻擊（甚至蔓延到站外）和無理誣陷誹謗縱容下逐漸升級失控，以致元維基採取這一「最後手段」，值得社群反思。--4Li 2017年12月3日 (日) 02:31 (UTC)

以前（2014年）覺得他被封有點冤，但是現在我覺得他在解封之後沒能保持克制，並對他人人身攻擊，這種情況下被封禁並不奇怪，如果他能夠減少人身攻擊遵守WP:CIVIL，我相信他能為維基百科貢獻更多。--№.N（留言） 2017年12月3日 (日) 03:14 (UTC)

我的意思是從元維基討論無果到愛孟被封禁這段時間，真的沒有人知道有人在走全域封禁的程序？其實今年3月也有人提到全域封禁的事，也不知道是否是認真的。當然，按照一般流程處理需要4個星期，就算因案情複雜延長也不太可能拖上數月之久，所以我傾向於認為是元維基討論之後的提報。同對維基無法靠公開討論得出共識表示遺憾。--Xgsh（留言） 2017年12月3日 (日) 14:36 (UTC)

然而實際執行起來……雖然我個人比較期待兩派和解,希望Panzer VI-II的理想能夠早日實現。但是，依我的觀察，現在這些反對愛孟一派（不知道是否還有潛水的人士參與其中）只在意維護自己的聲譽，而缺乏整合中文社群的魄力。如果愛孟一派堅持鬥爭，這種分裂的局面還是會持續下去。考慮到雙方的管理員（其中暗中倒戈的也有不少）以及基本盤都沒怎麼動，只要換幾個人還是可以繼續吵上幾年，就像之前守望者愛孟還沒有解封的時候那樣。--Xgsh（留言） 2017年12月5日 (二) 00:42 (UTC)

是的，關於愛孟的本地賬戶，現在已無任何封禁，本地社群沒什麼可做的了。至於兩派之間如何化干戈為玉帛，就要看兩派「領導人」的膽識與智慧了（至少像之前那樣聽得風就是雨然後到互煮客棧鬧個大新聞是不行的）。我相信年輕的一代在眼光與能力上應該會更上一層樓。--4Li 2017年12月5日 (二) 02:59 (UTC)
即使不考慮個人恩怨的因素，兩個用戶組在人員數量、貢獻量方面的差距還是必然的。目前被基金會認可的WUGC很大可能要被WMC取代或吸收。目前WUGC主要專注海外事務，也漸漸不活躍，近幾年的年度報告一直說「stop accepting new members publicly and public offline activities after Chinese Wikipedia has blocked in May, 2015」——因為大陸地區封鎖而停止招人以及公開活動，可能是其不活躍的主因。@AddisWang、Mys 721tx：這個決定是否有安全或法律方面的考量？WMC招了一百來個人、開了幾次聚會也沒有什麼事情，難道作為基金會目前認可的用戶組有什麼敏感之處嗎？還請賜教。WMC則通過QQ群等渠道掌握了大部分大陸地區新手的入口，得以快速發展。如果WMC現在的目的是儘快得到基金會的認可，暫時沒有必要對抗基金會的決定，直接宣揚建設維基為主就可以了。其他過去的歷史遺留問題，也不是不可以商量的。我支持大陸地區維基人發展社群尋求基金會認可的努力，但堅決反對人身攻擊、惡意推定、歪曲事實的無益行為。相關方針--Xgsh（留言） 2017年12月5日 (二) 07:02 (UTC)

回Antigng：我說的不是本地引入禁制制度；而是全域禁制在本地其他方針中沒有體現。比如我們很多年前就拿掉了CSD G5: Banned User。又比如說目前本地對於User:守望者愛孟及User talk:守望者愛孟兩個頁面施加的保護是找不到方針依據的（該賬戶僅被施全域編輯禁制，而無方針要求被全域編輯禁制的用戶的用戶頁及用戶討論頁應掛模板加全保護，雖然我們目前可以參照永久封禁來執行。） --達師 - 345 - 574 2017年12月5日 (二) 06:14 (UTC)

全域禁制相當於全域封禁（同樣導致無法編輯），而且該次是基金會決定，基本上永久性的並不被推翻，也就是說就算保留權限也用不了，所以可以類比處理。不過保留恢復的條件，如果禁制能被撤銷的話。——路過圍觀的Sakamotosan 2017年12月7日 (四) 00:53 (UTC)

The sardine run of southern Africa occurs from May through July when billions of sardines – or more specifically the Southern African pilchard Sardinops sagax – spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank and move northward along the east coast of South Africa. Their sheer numbers create a feeding frenzy along the coastline. The run, containing millions of individual sardines, occurs when a current of cold water heads north from the Agulhas Bank up to Mozambique where it then leaves the coastline and goes further east into the Indian Ocean. In terms of biomass, researchers estimate the sardine run could rival East Africa's great wildebeest migration. However, little is known of the phenomenon. It is believed that the water temperature has to drop below 21 °C in order for the migration to take place. In 2003, the sardines failed to 'run' for the third time in 23 years. While 2005 saw a good run, 2006 marked another non-run. The shoals are often more than 7 km long, 1.5 km wide and 30 metres deep and are clearly visible from spotter planes or from the surface. Sardines group together when they are threatened. This instinctual behaviour is a defence mechanism, as lone individuals are more likely to be eaten than large groups.

  • Sandra presented the plans for Structured Commons during WikidataCon in Berlin, on October 29. The presentation focused on collaboration between the Wikidata and Commons communities. You can see the full video here.
Partners and allies
  • We are still welcoming (more) staff from GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) to become part of our long-term focus group (phabricator task T174134). You will be kept in the loop of the project, and receive regular small surveys and requests for feedback. Get in touch with Sandra if you're interested - your input in helping to shape this project is highly valued!
Research
  • Research findings from interviews and surveys of GLAM project participants are being published to the research page. Check back over the next few weeks as additional details (notes, quotes, charts, blog posts, and slide decks) will be added to or linked from that page.
Development
  • The Structured Commons team has written and submitted a report about the first nine months of work on the project to its funders, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The 53-page report, published on November 1, is available on Wikimedia Commons.
  • The team has started working on designs for changes to the upload wizard (T182019).
  • We started preliminary work to prototype changes for file info pages.
  • Work on the MediaInfo extension is ongoing (T176012).
  • The team is continuing its work on baseline metrics on Commons, in order to be able to measure the effectiveness of structured data on Commons. (T174519)
  • Upcoming: in the first half of 2018, the first prototypes and design sketches for file pages, the UploadWizard, and for search will be published for discussion and feedback!

Rooh Afza is a non-alcoholic concentrated squash. It was formulated in 1906 in Ghaziabad, British India and is still manufactured and popular in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. The recipe of Rooh Afza combines several ingredients popularly believed to be cooling agents, such as rose, which is used as a remedy for loo (the hot summer winds of Northern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). The drink is commonly associated with the month of Ramadan, in which it is usually consumed during iftar.

Wikidata weekly summary #291

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Additional languages for monolingual values got approved by the language committee: ami (Amis), bnn (Bunun), fos (Siraya), ppu (Papora / Hoanya), pwn (Paiwan), pyu (Puyuma), ssf (Thao), trv (Seediq / Taroko), uun (Pazeh) (see gerrit:374052, phab:T144272)
    • More work on caching constraint results so we can enable the constraints checks for all logged-in users by default
    • Fixed a bug when edit links showed up in diff views (phabricator:T181807)
    • Final step towards being able to store statements on Forms of a Lexeme
    • Disabled RDF support for Lexemes as the mapping isn't defined yet (phabricator:T182660)
    • Adding some more smart tracking for Lua usage so we better know which properties from an item are used on a Wikipedia article even when the whole item is loaded (phabricator:T179923)

Edit Review Improvements [More information • Help pages]

  • The filters are now deployed as a default feature on all wikis on RecentChanges and RecentChangesLinked pages.
  • The filters are still available as a Beta feature on all wikis on Watchlists. Please try them!
  • LiveUpdates have been deployed as a default feature for all wikis.
  • On wikis using Extension:Translate, translated messages can now be filtered. System messages can be filtered as well, on all wikis. [16]
  • "顯示最新更改" link is now more prominent, to invite users to use that native feature to update the list of results. [17]
  • Pagination and time period selectors are now combined and located on the right on left-to-right wikis. [18]
  • When a user wanted to click outside of the filter menu to close it, it was possible to click on "revert" link by accident. It is not possible anymore. [19]
  • It is now possible to filter the following events using the Tags menu: Making a page a redirect, Changing redirect target, Changing an existing redirect into a non-redirect, Blanking of the page, Removing more than 90% of a page content, Rolling back an edit. [20]
  • Some design improvements have been done to Related Changes page to integrate the new filters. [21]
  • "Save current filter settings" menu and legend overlapped the results. This is now fixed. [22]

  • Now Content Translation prevents source and target language to be set to same language. [24]
  • The dialog for selecting article to translate is standardized. It introduces a new component that is used for the selected page on both the "New translation" dialog and the "Suggested pages" list. [25]
  • More space is given to the language filter, to increase responsiveness and show more language names without truncation. [26]
  • While searching for a new page to translate, duplicates are not shown anymore for user search input. [27]
  • Various PHP warnings and JavaScript errors have been fixed. [28][29]

  • It is now possible to use Special:Nuke on hidden Structured discussion topics. [30]
  • The Reply button is not active anymore until something is typed. [31]

Call for Wikimania 2018 Scholarships

Hi all,

We wanted to inform you that scholarship applications for Wikimania 2018 which is being held in Cape Town, South Africa on July 18–22, 2018 are now being accepted. Applications are open until Monday, 22 January 2018 23:59 UTC.

Applicants will be able to apply for a partial or full scholarship. A full scholarship will cover the cost of an individual's round-trip travel, shared accommodation, and conference registration fees as arranged by the Wikimedia Foundation. A partial scholarship will cover conference registration fees and shared accommodation. Applicants will be rated using a pre-determined selection process and selection criteria established by the Scholarship Committee and the Wikimedia Foundation, who will determine which applications are successful. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
