媒体马戏团

在2004年8月，一名恐怖份子对新泽西州纽瓦克的保德信金融集团（英语：Prudential Financial）总部大楼和纽约市其它建筑物的威胁的证据的消息公布后，新闻媒体卫星上行线路卡车与摄影记者聚集在其门外。

媒体马戏团（英语：Media circus）是一个口语的隐喻或惯用语，用来描述媒体在被报导事件的报导范围超出比例的新闻事件，例如在现场的记者数量，新闻媒体刊登或播出的数量，和媒体的炒作程度。此用语是透过与马戏团相比的方法来批判媒体，通常是负面的，且被认为是反对如实观察的惯用语。在1970年代时，该用语被用作这种意思已很普遍^[1]^[2]。

尽管构想更为古早，术语“媒体马戏团”大约在1970年代中期时开始出现。林恩·哈尼（Lynn Haney）在1976年写的书是一个早期的例子，她写了有关运动员克里斯·埃弗特的爱情故事：“毕竟，他们的恋爱，一直都是‘媒体马戏团’^[3]”。几年后，《华盛顿邮报》也有刊登一个类似的恋爱例子，“格蕾丝王妃仍然因为她在1956年嫁给兰尼埃亲王的婚礼成为了‘媒体马戏团’而精神受创^[4]”。自1970年代以来，随着时间的推移，这个词已经越来越受欢迎。

媒体马戏团在1951年的电影“倒扣的王牌（英语：Ace in the Hole (film)）”中成了重要的剧情手段，该电影是关于一名自私的记者报导了一场矿坑灾难，使得一个人受困而死在地底下。这部电影冷嘲热讽地探讨了媒体和他们所报导的新闻之间的关系。该电影后来被以“盛大的狂欢节（The Big Carnival）”之名重新发表，其中“狂欢节（carnival）”在当时是指“马戏团（circus）”。
