蜂鸟是属于雨燕目蜂鸟科(学名:Trochilidae)的鸟类,分为约113个属和366个物种,[2]但也有一些动物学家将它们分类为单独的蜂鸟目(学名:Trochiliformes)。[3]现代蜂鸟主要分布在中南美洲,少数物种分布在北美洲,栖息地非常多样化,不论是干旱的沙漠还是茂密的热带雨林,甚至是安第斯山脉的高原上均有不同种类的蜂鸟分布,最北可到阿拉斯加,最南可到火地群岛。[4]根据不同的研究结论,约有24-28种蜂鸟被列为濒危或极危,另有许多种蜂鸟的数量也在减少,在最近150年内布雷氏翠蜂鸟和中美翠蜂鸟已经灭绝。[4][5][6]
蜂鸟具有各种特殊的特征,使它们能够快速、灵活地飞行,具有出色的代谢能力,能适应高海拔环境,具有敏锐的视觉和沟通能力,并且某些种类能进行长距离迁徙。雄性蜂鸟的羽色在所有鸟类中最为多样化,特别是蓝色、绿色和紫色。[7]
蜂鸟是体型最小的鸟类类群,大多数种类的体长约在7.5-13厘米,吸蜜蜂鸟体长5厘米,僅重1.8公克,是世界上最小的鸟;最大的蜂鸟巨蜂鳥体长23厘米,体重也僅18-24克。蜂鸟以其长喙而闻名,它们的喙特化用于吸食植物的花蜜,蜂鸟90%的食物来源是花蜜,也兼以昆虫等小型无脊椎动物为食。[6]
它们之所以被称为蜂鸟(hummingbird),是因为它们飞行时振翅而产生的与蜂类似的嗡嗡声(humming),其他鸟类和人都能听到这种声音。它们能够通过快速振翅而在空中悬停,翅膀拍动的频率因种类而异,大型蜂鸟约每秒12次,小型蜂鸟约每秒80次。
蜂鸟是多配偶制的鸟类,一只雄鸟常常与多只雌鸟交配,主要的求偶方式有鸣唱、展示及飞行,鸟巢一般为杯状,少数有其它结构,一般每窝产卵两枚,雌鸟单独育雏。[6]
蜂鸟具有所有恒温动物中最高的单位质量代谢速率[8][9]。为了在食物匮乏和夜间不觅食时节省能量,它们可以进入类似于冬眠的蛰伏状态,将代谢速率降低到正常速率的1/15[9][10]。大多数蜂鸟在自己的栖息范围内为留鸟,但也有少数蜂鸟迁徙,棕煌蜂鸟是其中迁徙距离最远的一种,每年两次飞跃约6300公里的距离,在阿拉斯加和墨西哥之间往返迁徙。
蜂鸟与其姊妹群雨燕科和凤头雨燕科在大约4200万年前分化,[11]已知最古老的蜂鸟化石出土于早漸新世鲁培尔期的欧洲,[12]现存蜂鸟的共同祖先估计生活在2200万年前的南美洲。
概述
形态
蜂鸟是已知最小、现存最小的鸟类,[13][14][15]在已知的366种蜂鸟中,体重最小的仅有2克,最大的也只有20克。蜂鸟的喙长而窄,长度及曲直各异,[16][17]吸蜜蜂鸟体长5厘米,仅重1.8公克,是世界上最小的鸟,也是最小的恒温脊椎动物。[16][18]
蜂鸟的身体结构紧凑,翅膀相对较长,呈刀片状,让它们能像直升机一样飞行,包括在空中悬停。蜂鸟悬停时,振翅产生的蜂鸣声起到警告其他鸟类的作用。有些物种的雄鸟喙使用尾羽发出的声音用于求偶。[16][17] 蜂鸟振翅速度极快,最高可达每秒80次,这受益于他们从花蜜中获取的糖分提供的极高的新陈代谢率。[9][17]
蜂鸟的腿短,没有胫跗骨,脚趾有三趾朝前,拇趾朝后。[19][20]蜂鸟的脚趾呈爪状,内表面有脊状结构,有助于抓握花茎或花瓣。[20]与大多数鸟类不同,蜂鸟不会用脚在地面上行走或跳跃,而是横向地滑动。蜂鸟的足还用于在停栖时抓握、整理羽毛、雌鸟的筑巢以及在打斗中使用脚趾来抓住对手的羽毛。[19][20]
蜂鸟用腿产生推力,起到类似活塞的作用,但实际上蜂鸟的腿较短,产生的推力比其他鸟类少约20%,[21]在飞行过程中,蜂鸟的脚收缩在身体下方,以获得最佳的空气动力学性能和机动性。[20]
在已被测量过飞行速度的物种之中,最快的蜂鸟能够以超过15米/秒(54千米/小时)的速度飞行。[18]在求偶过程中,一些物种的雄鸟能够从30米的高度俯冲向雌鸟,速度约为23米/秒(83千米/小时)。[22][23]
大多数物种具有性别异型,在小型蜂鸟物种中,雄鸟体型比雌鸟小,在大型物种中则反之,差异程度因蜂鸟物种而异。雄鸟通常有明亮鲜艳的羽毛,常见于羽冠、颈部或细长的尾羽,雄鸟具有彩虹色的颈羽,其颜色随着观察角度的不同而变化,以吸引雌性,并警告争夺领土的同性竞争者。[16][17]

蜂鸟在一岁时达到性成熟,可以交配。[24]交配时,雄性与雌性的泄殖腔相连接,持续3到5秒,传递精子到雌鸟体内以使卵子受精。[24]
蜂鸟均由雌性负责筑巢,巢呈杯状,直径约3.8厘米,通常用蜘蛛网、地衣、苔藓和松散的植物纤维固定在树枝上。[16][17]蜂鸟每个巢有卵两枚,一般为豌豆大小,是所有鸟类中最小的蛋;卵孵化出雏鸟大约需要2到3周。[16][17]雏鸟孵出后只由雌鸟通过反吐喂养,约3周后离巢。[17][25]
吸蜜蜂鸟的平均寿命约为7到10年,[18]红喉北蜂鸟的平均寿命约为3到5年,未满周岁的小鸟的死亡率最高,[25]但通过环志得知,已知最长寿的一只红喉北蜂鸟寿命长达9年2个月。[26]
近似生物

1825年,爱尔兰动物学家尼古拉斯·艾尔沃德·维戈尔斯描述了蜂鸟科,以牙买加特有的绶带蜂鸟属为模式属。[30][31]蜂鸟科属于雨燕目,但也有些学者,例如查勒斯·西布莱及喬恩·艾爾奎斯特在鸟类DNA分类系统中将其单独分类为蜂鸟目,[3]截止到2023年,蜂鸟科一般被分为约113个属和366个物种,在鸟类的所有科中排名第三,仅次于霸鹟科和唐纳雀科。[2]传统上它们被分为隐蜂鸟亚科和蜂鸟亚科,但分子系统发生学研究显示,隐蜂鸟亚科与原属于蜂鸟亚科的叉尾蜂鸟属是姐妹群,这令蜂鸟亚科不是单系群,因而现今它们被划分为了6个亚科及9个支系,包括隐蜂鸟亚科、叉尾蜂鸟亚科、芒果蜂鸟亚科、冠蜂鸟亚科(辉蜂鸟族、冠蜂鸟族)、巨蜂鸟亚科及蜂鸟亚科(宝石蜂鸟族、吸蜜蜂鸟族和蜂鸟族)。[11][32]

现今的蜂鸟大多生活在中南美洲,在南美洲的巴西和巴哈马群岛曾发现100万年前的蜂鸟化石,因此当时的动物学家认为蜂鸟起源于更新世;然而在2004年,杰拉尔德·迈尔(Gerald Mayr)在德国发现了歐洲蜂鳥的化石,形态与现代蜂鸟相似,是迄今已知最早的蜂鳥化石,距今有3000多万年的历史,由于这是首次在美洲以外发现蜂鸟的化石,迈尔经过谨慎的研究和鉴定之后才做出结论。因此蜂鸟的祖先远在渐新世的时候便已在欧洲出现。[37][12][38][39]
在梅塞尔坑和高加索地区发现了一些3500至4000万年前的未能准确鉴定的鸟类化石,它们可能是蜂鸟,但也可能属于已灭绝的科Jungornithidae,说明这两个类群的分化可能就发生在这一时间。化石出土地在当时的气候与加勒比海北部或中国最南部非常相似。目前科学家仍然并未了解蜂鸟从原始的欧洲蜂鸟到更新世化石之间的大约2500万年间发生了什么。惊人的形态适应、体型缩小、向美洲的扩散和在欧亚大陆的灭绝都发生在这个时间段内。DNA-DNA杂交结果表明,南美蜂鸟的主要辐射部分发生在中新世,大约1200到1300万年前,与安第斯山脉北部隆升的时间一致。[40]
2013年,怀俄明州出土了一块鸟类化石,被认为是蜂鸟科与雨燕科及凤头雨燕科分化前的祖先。[41]
食物
蜂鸟90%的食物来源是花蜜,也兼以昆虫等小型无脊椎动物为食,蜂鸟喜愛蜜源植物,包括小蝦花、倒挂金钟及钓钟柳属等的植物,因此蜂鸟对于特定种类的植物是重要的传粉者。[6]蜂鸟的运动量十分巨大,为了供应體力的高消耗,蜂鸟每天会吃下约为自身体积两倍的食物(花粉),同时也因此被认为有着惊人的新陈代谢速度。[33]
大多数鸟类因为缺少特定受体而不具备识别甜味的能力,蜂鸟的甜味感受器则是由于基因突变而从鲜味感受器「改造」而来的,这种基因突变令蜂鸟的食谱发生了巨大变化,并促进了蜂鸟与植物之间的协同进化。[42]
蜂鸟长期与蜜源植物协同进化,[43]这意味着蜂鸟的形态特征——如喙长、喙形和体重,与植物的形态特征——如花冠的长度、体积和形状在演化过程中长期相互适应。[44]一些特殊喙形的物种,如刀嘴蜂鳥和镰嘴蜂鸟属均是与特定的少数植物物种协同进化而来,但这种互利共生关系是动态的,蜂鸟也可能在进化历程中逐渐改变与其共生的植物物种。[45]吸蜜蜂鸟演变成了世界上最小的鸟,从而能更成功地与长喙天蛾竞争取食特定植物的花蜜。[46][47]花朵和喙形的协同进化促进了蜂鸟和植物的新物种的产生。由于蜂鸟对植物的特化性适应,蜂鸟多样性最高的地区(如安第斯山脉)可能有多达140种蜂鸟共存。[33]
许多由蜂鸟传粉的植物具有红色、橙色和亮粉红色的花朵,不过鸟类也从其他颜色的花中吸取花蜜。蜂鸟能够看到近紫外波段,但蜂鸟传粉的花朵并不像许多虫媒花那样反射这些波长。这种狭窄的颜色光谱可能使蜂鸟传粉的花朵对大多数昆虫相对不显眼,从而减少盗蜜现象。[48][49]蜂鸟传粉植物产生的花蜜含糖量较低,平均仅为正常的25%,但其中蔗糖含量较高,而昆虫传粉的花通常产生以果糖和葡萄糖为主的花蜜,含糖量更高。[50]
蜂鸟与它们访问的蜜源植物之间有着紧密的协同进化关系,通常被称为植物-鸟类互惠网络。[51]这些鸟类在物种丰富度较高的群落中表现出高度的特化,这种特化来源于蜂鸟之间的种间竞争,并专性适应了不同的生态位。[51][52]
分布
蜂鸟分布在南北美洲从阿拉斯加中南部到火地群岛的广阔范围,包括加勒比海区域。大多数物种分布在中美洲和南美洲的热带和亚热带地区,但也有几个物种在温带地区繁殖,甚至一些蜂鸟分布在海拔高达5200米的安第斯高原上。[53]
物种最丰富的地区是安第斯山脉北部及临近山麓的湿润热带和亚热带森林,大西洋沿岸的森林、中美洲及墨西哥南部也有较多的蜂鸟。在美国记录到的蜂鸟种类不到25种,在加拿大和智利各记录到不足10种,[54]而哥伦比亚有160多种,[55]同样面积较小的厄瓜多尔有大约130种。[56]
共366种蜂鸟中,约有12-15种是候鸟,其中尤以北美洲的蜂鸟居多,[57]而亚马逊流域到中美洲一带的热带雨林环境气候和食物来源相对恒定,因而这里的蜂鸟无需迁徙,此处也是蜂鸟种类最丰富的地区。[58]作为最小的现生鸟类,蜂鸟身体的保温能力相对有限,通常无法在冬季持续生活在高纬度地区,除非全年都有充足的食物,尤其是花蜜。[59]其他影响迁徙的因素包括食物的季节性变化、气候、资源竞争、天敌等。[59]
大多数北美洲蜂鸟会在秋季南下墨西哥、加勒比海岛屿、中美洲等地越冬,[60]少数物种是佛罗里达州、加利福尼亚州及美国西南部的沙漠地区的留鸟。[60]
保护
大多数蜂鸟物种的栖息地非常偏僻,导致其种群数量难以评估。美国和加拿大的种群研究表明,红喉北蜂鸟的数量约为3400万,棕煌蜂鸟的数量约为1900万,黑颏北蜂鸟、朱红蜂鸟和宽尾煌蜂鸟的数量约为800万,星蜂鸟约为400万,丽羽蜂鸟和艾氏煌蜂鸟约有200万,一些物种的种群仅有数千或数百个体。[4]
根据2023年国际自然保护联盟濒危物种红色名录,有9种蜂鸟被列为极危,17种濒危,11种易危,22种近危。[61]钩嘴铜色蜂鸟被列入濒危野生动植物种国际贸易公约附录I,其它所有蜂鸟物种被列入附录II。[1]
在美国和加拿大栖息的15种蜂鸟中,有数种的分布范围发生了变化,还有其他一些蜂鸟的数量自20世纪70年代以来呈下降趋势,到2023年有几十种蜂鸟物种数量正在下降。[4][5]21世纪以来,棕煌蜂鸟、丽羽蜂鸟、星蜂鸟、宽尾煌蜂鸟和艾氏煌蜂鸟的数量大幅减少,有些自1970年以来减少了多达67%的种群,几乎是之前50年的两倍之多。[4][5][62]红喉北蜂鸟是北美洲最多的蜂鸟,在21世纪初期减少了17%。[5]栖息地丧失、撞玻璃、被猫捕食、农药以及气候变化对食物、迁徙和繁殖造成的影响是导致蜂鸟数量下降的因素。[4][62]相比之下,自2010年以来,朱红蜂鸟的数量则大幅加速增长,[5]分布范围也向北扩展。[63]
文化
阿兹特克人佩戴蜂鸟护身符,有些护身符是由蜂鸟身体部位制成的,有些是描绘蜂鸟的艺术品,象征着活力、精力和工作能力,它们尖锐的喙象征着武器、放血、穿透和亲密关系。蜂鸟护符被认为能增加佩戴者的性能力、精力和活力,并提升武器技能。[64]阿兹特克战神维齐洛波奇特利(納瓦特爾語:Huitzilopochtli,词源为納瓦特爾語的「蜂鸟」——huitzil)经常被描绘成蜂鸟的形象。[65]阿兹特克人相信,死去的战士将转世为蜂鸟。[65][66]纳斯卡巨画中也有描绘蜂鸟的内容。[67]
特立尼达和多巴哥被称为“蜂鸟之地”,其国徽、1分硬币和国家航空公司加勒比航空的标志及涂装上都有蜂鸟图案。[68][69][70]
